As in many parts of China, it's still the custom in Hong Kong for a street to specialise in a particular trade. There's no mistaking what's on offer in Flower Market Road
Here more than a hundred shops are devoted to all things floral. Though it is primarily a wholesale market, shoppers looking for a single bunch of flowers to cheer up their homes aren’t turned away. Most shops open from 9.30am until 7:30pm every day. Take the MTR to Prince Edward station and walk eastwards a couple of blocks. The street is well signposted and there’s no mistaking it. Hong Kong’s Flower Market Road, Wholesale and Retail ShoppingIn the early morning, florists from around Hong Kong buy their stock from lorries parked in the street. The flowers are brought in from China by road across the border, as well as flown in from Holland and Japan, ensuring a constant supply of exotic blooms. The market caters to retail buyers as well. Mid morning, housewives call in for a bouquet on the way home from shopping. On Saturdays, office girls flock here for a bunch of flowers to brighten the weekend. All come to admire the dozens of familiar and strange blossoms, and to inhale the myriad perfumes. Inside the cool, damp shops assistants cut and assemble flower arrangements, placing them in containers on the pavement outside to tempt passers-by. Buckets hold cut flowers to be sold in groups of five and ten. As well as roses, carnations, lilies and gladioli, there are many exotic blooms from other parts of Asia, often in unusual colours. Other shops specialise in pot plants, including many varieties of rare orchids. The flower market is spectacular in the week before the Chinese New Year in January or February, when people gather here to buy narcissi, sprays of plum blossom, and kumquat trees. Each signify good fortune in the year ahead, as well as adding colour in the grey winter months. Hong Kong’s Flower Market Road, Containers, and AccessoriesThere’s a wide variety of bowls, baskets and other containers in which to put the flowers, and dozens of different kinds of paper, ribbons and accessories to dress up the bouquet. Some shops sell flowers made of silk and paper, which so closely resemble the real thing that it’s hard to tell the difference. Brighten Floriculture have several shops on Flower Market Road each specialising in different products. There’s the garden centre, the flower shop, the florist suppliers, the dried flower shop, the wholesaler, the orchid centre, and a garden tools shop. Hong Kong’s Flower Market Road , Bargain ShoppingWhatever time of year it is, a bunch or two of flowers will lift the spirits. Hong Kong is known for its bargain shopping and at Flower Market Road a beautiful bouquet can be bought for under US$20. Money well spent, with days of pleasure to follow.
