Hong Kong is not only about spectacular high rise buildings but street markets, sandy beaches and peaceful retreats in the outlying islands.

Hong Kong is not the shoppers' paradise it used to be but bargains can still be found and the sights are breathtaking. Avoid the typhoon season and enjoy a city that has everything to entertain all tastes. For a quick feeling of Hong Kong, here are some places that must be seen.

Star Ferry

The cheapest tourist attraction in the world and the perfect way to travel between Hong Kong island and Kowloon peninsula. At night it is ideal to admire the breathtaking and illuminated scenery of the waterfront on Hong Kong side.

Ladies Market

Despite its name it is a market for everyone. A Kowloon street market you should browse slowly for inexpensive clothing. No designer labels here unless they are fake.

Central District

The area where Hong Kong thrives with designer label shops, restaurants, spectacular tower blocks and shopping malls. Visit the HSBC building and the IFC2. What makes Hong Kong the international city it is can be found here.

Stanley

Small coastal town on the south of Hong Kong island. A huge street market awaits the tourist. Everything from souvenirs and crafts to clothing. Murray House was moved from Central stone by stone and now houses several good restaurants.

Tsim Sha Tsui

More shops to spend hours browsing along Nathan Road and adjacent streets. Plenty of tailors to choose from for bespoke clothing.

Ocean Park

It was here before Disney and it still amazes the visitor. Its location on top of a hill is breathtaking. You can get here by cable car with views to die for. The Aquarium is a fantastic experience. The Pandas are probably the best way of ending a visit to this Amusement Park.

Victoria Peak

The most spectacular views of Hong Kong can be enjoyed from here. To get to the Peak the best way is by the Tram, a funicular that has made the jaw-dropping ascent since 1888.

Mid-levels and Escalator

The Mid-levels is an upmarket residential area particularly favoured by expats who use a series of street escalators to get around. It is the longest open air escalator in the world and an experience not to be missed.

Lantau Island

Lantau is one of the most attractive outlying islands. This island can be reached by road but it is most enjoyable to do the trip by ferry.

Many interesting places can be visited here such as: the old fishermen’s town, Discovery Bay, Disneyland. The Big Buddha and Po Lin Monastery are among the most breathtaking. From the ferry port, take the bus to the Monastery and enjoy a fantastic scenery while going through small villages.

Macau

An hour away by ferry from Hong Kong, Macau is a lovely place which was under Portuguese rule for 400 years. Some areas resemble Mediterranean towns in Portugal and Spain. It is less hectic than Hong Kong but it undoubtedly deserves a visit.
